After a REALLY long time with no sightings in Benicia, we approached the 9th Street Alvarez Park by car on West J, and saw a big flock of 23 to 26 in flight high over Southampton Bay. They circled and floated in a northerly direction over land. I didn't get a good picture, but here you can imagine the bright specks of white alternating with their disappearance and reappearance:

June - July, 2017
We are wondering why so few pelicans in Benicia this year! Granted we were away in Michigan for 3 weeks in July, but looking back into May and April, only 2 sightings, and none in June and July! We did a few internet searches to see if there is talk about a problem or changes of patterns, but could not discover anything. Puzzling!

NO pelicans in Benicia, but today Mary Susan say about 8 on the sloughs north or Route 37, just west of Vallejo.

Somewhat strangely, we have seen NO pelicans on the Carquinez Strait in Benicia yet as of today! They have arrived in April or early May for each of the last 5 years...

Three floating in circles in the sky over Mary Farmar Elementary School just north of West Military and West 10th Street. They made their way to the northwest toward Vallejo.

First siting of the year: Mary Susan saw 4 in flight over First Street downtown near East G, heading south-southwest toward the Carquinez Strait.
