Benicia, post-election: life goes on

By Roger Straw

BENICIA, CA / November 9, 2007, 7:36 AM  Well, the election is over, and life goes on in our little town. A light news day.

Not so light for Joe Kearns, who awaits a trial date in December, for supposedly "peeping" into Bill Whitney's phone bank operation on election night.

Not so light for Mayor-elect Patterson, who must have her hands overfull getting ready for a December 4 swearing in. (One of her first phone calls upon hearing the vote count on election night was her boss in Sacramento. Yes, she holds down a full-time job with the State of California as a staff environmental scientist for the Governor's Delta Vision Blue Ribbon Task Force and the Department of Water Resources. How she can do it is way beyond me!)

And not so light for the dead-heat candidates for Mayor in Vallejo, Gary Cloutier and Osby Davis. How close can you bite a fingernail, anyway? Their election rests in the hands of 840 Solano County "provisional ballots."

From wikipedia: "A provisional ballot is used to record a vote when there is some question in regards to a given voter's eligibility. A provisional ballot would be cast when:

  • The voter refuses to show a photo ID (in regions that require one)
  • The voter's name does not appear on the electoral roll for the given precinct.
  • The voter's registration contains inaccurate or out-dated information such as the wrong address or a misspelled name.
  • The voter's ballot has already been recorded

A provisional ballot is counted contingent upon the verification of that voter's eligibility."

Of the 840 provisional ballots County-wide, probably less than 10% will be from Benicia, Thus, less than 90 Benicia votes remain to be counted. None of the races in Benicia stand to be overturned by the count of provisional ballots.

Here are the official results on Solano County's website.
