12-HOUR / 24-HOUR RUN Around 3pm on Friday, April 14, six of our Sacred Runners left from Charlotte and continued running for as long as they could, through the night, finishing at 3pm on Saturday afternoon. K.A. Garlick and Marcus Atkinson completed 72 miles; Octavia Subia and Jerry Cunningham completed 60 miles; and Kid Valance completed 54 miles. Three of our Sacred Walkers completed a 12-hour Walk. Paul Owns the Sabre, Stephanie Manning and Minoh Banks completed the 12 hours. Owns the Sabre amazed us all, given his 66 years and his history of stroke and diabetes. Minoh completed the feat at only 13 years of age. And Stephanie Manning walked just over a marathon, at 27 miles! Both groups were given excellent support, and those who drove the support vehicles and who watched carefully over the runners and walkers deserve high praise for their own endurance through a sleepless night. Support team members included Jim Toren and Rogelio Quintero, Les and Tater Burris, and Melinda Clyne. Why do we do this? Why such an extreme effort? As with every step on Sacred Run, our effort is to show ultimate respect and concern for our Mother Earth, for the air and the water and the sacred places, and for all living things: All Life is Sacred. Walkers and runners will discover a deeper inner strength as the miles go by, and in the extended rhythms of the day's journey, they will offer powerful prayers for peace and life. Knoxville
